Ever wonder why dogs dig before lying down?
Dr. Molly McAllister of Bark Team shares the answer!
“It can be pretty entertaining watching your dog prepare his spot before finally laying down to rest but a lot of owners ask why their dogs do it.
This behavior is known as denning, and this instinct is inherent in your dog from their ancestors.
Before dogs were domesticated, they would spend time searching for a well-protected natural den-like place to sleep in.
They would often dig a small hole and then paw the ground, then move the dirt around to move stones and sticks to make it more comfortable for their rest.
Even though your dog does not need to make his bed anymore comfortable than it already is, he still possesses that centuries-old instinct to den.”
