It’s Dr. Matt to the rescue once again! This time Vet Ranch saved a limping dog 45 minutes before he was scheduled to be euthanized!
Meet Markie! This sweet black dog was on a shelter’s kill list. Concerned shelter staff reached out to Dr. Matt at 4:15 pm. They told him that if nobody pulled the dog he would be put to sleep at around 5:00pm.
Despite being at full capacity, Dr. Matt of course agreed to take Markie in. When the poor black dog arrived at the clinic, he was limping on his back left leg. The veterinarian then took an x-ray to see what’s causing the dog so much pain.
The femoral head of Markie’s left leg was broken and it grinded every time he walked. His hip was also slightly broken but Dr. Matt said it would not be an issue.
Since it was late, Dr. Matt had no time to perform orthopedic surgery on Markie that day, but neutered him instead because it takes less time.
The next day, Dr. Matt performed a Femoral Head Ostectomy on Markie. This is a procedure that removes the head of the femur.
Unlike many other FHO procedures, Markie’s case was easier to fix. Dr. Matt only had to remove the already-broken femoral head and make sure that there are no sharp bones left in the dog’s thigh.
When he was satisfied, Dr. Matt sutured Markie up and later woke him from the anesthetic.
Just weeks after the surgery, the changes in Markie’s disposition and energy levels are marked. He’s still limping a bit but can now put weight on his left hind leg. Markie is a lot happier. He turned out to be such a sweet pooch who loves giving and receiving love.
Markie likes playing with Dr. Matt’s Boxer dog, Dozer! See them have fun, wrestle and run around!
Markie is a sweet dog who gets along with everyone – including other dogs. So if you wish to adopt him, do send Vet Ranch a message!
Happy Tails, Markie!
