Did You Know?

The Portuguese Podengo comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large.

Portuguese Podengo Overview

The Portuguese Podengo is a unique breed that comes in three different sizes. Each was bred to hunt, and the size correlated with the terrain they hunted in. Grandes (the largest) hunted wild boar while the Medio (middle) was dexterous against rabbits. The Pequeno (smallest) is the world’s smallest hunting dog, and is small enough to enter rabbit warrens and flush out prey.

Portuguese Podengo Characteristics

The Podengo has a range of coats from terrier-like with the smallest, to a smooth, flatter coat in the larger sizes. Each features a variety of colors with the most prominent being a combination of orange and white. The ears are usually perked upright, though one may flop downward, and the tail is long and narrow.

Portuguese Podengo Temperament

All three sizes are great companions and quiet and well mannered. This makes them great for family pets. However, the breed is naturally alert and watchful, but may hunt smaller pets in the household due to the natural instincts. Time spent with the family is what makes the Podengo happiest, and they are playful and charming with their owners.

Portuguese Podengo Care

The Podengo lives on average 12 to 14 years, typical for medium sized dogs. There are no breed specific health concerns. However, proper veterinary and preventive care is key to helping any breed of dog live a long and happy life.

Portuguese Podengo Coat

The two coat styles include a wire coat and a smooth coat, much like some collie breeds. They are both easy to care for and require only weekly brushing to be maintained. The coats are naturally clean keeping, and do not require intensive grooming.

Portuguese Podengo Training

All sizes of Podengo are very easily trainable and will pick up tasks given to them. They learn best in hunting-related tasks, however, do well as house companions and playful pets. Early socialization if around other small animals may help with their hunting nature.

Portuguese Podengo Activity

The Podengo is active in all of his sizes, and being outdoors is great fun. Hunting activities, long walks or hikes, or just places where he can stretch his legs and explore will keep the Podengo happy both mentally and physically.
