October Is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month! Do You Have Room For A Shelter Dog?

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) announced that the month of October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month!

Every year, millions of healthy and innocent shelter pets are euthanized. This month is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month and the aim is to raise awareness about homeless dogs and give them a chance at a forever home.

While this cause is promoted in the month of October, the sad truth is that millions of dogs are in need of rescue or adoption every month and day of the year.

People abandon dogs for several reasons – most of them selfish. Here a list of some of the ridiculous stated reasons:

  • the family is expecting a baby and can’t take care of both a child and a dog,
  • they are moving and “can’t take the dog” with them,
  • dogs cost too much,
  • we do not have the patience to train the dog,
  • the dog urinates on the carpet.

Some dog owners do surrender their dogs for understandable reasons, however.

Love for animals is not always enough. The cost of vaccinations and medical emergencies, obedience training, pet exercise, home environment, the entire household’s opinion, and how other pets will interact with a new dog or cat are all factors to take into consideration.

People who decide to adopt shelters dogs should know in advance that it can sometimes be stressful – especially with previously abused dogs or those who have had little to no social interaction. Patience and dedication will always make a difference. Teaching a scared dog to finally love and give his trust can be a very rewarding experience.

Remember that when you adopt a shelter dog, you are saving two lives:the one you adopt from the shelter and the new one that the shelter can finally take in.

Look deeply into your hearts and see if you have room in your home and heart for another pup!
