In the United Kingdom, an extremely intuitive dog saved the lives of her owner and her baby.
Things may have turned out very differently if Alhanna Butler had agreed to get rid of her Akita, Keola. The woman from South Yorkshire was told to get rid of the dog when she became pregnant. But she loves her dog so much and refused to do what the people around her suggested.
Thankfully she did the right thing.
One day the dog would not leave her mom’s side, and cried until Alhanna made a trip to the hospital. That trip saved the lives of both her and her unborn son just in time.
“I was 20 weeks pregnant and had been so unwell for weeks, I couldn’t walk… and I hadn’t kept anything down for weeks,” Alhanna said in a post on Facebook. “Doctors put it down to me being so small and my spine not being able to manage with the extra weight well and just normal pregnancy symptoms but Keola wouldn’t leave my side.”
When Alhanna got ready for work, the Akita persistently nudged her, and would not stop barking and whining.
And when she returned home, “Keola looked so sad and I knew something was bothering her. She just sat there staring at me and wouldn’t let me go anywhere alone.”
Alhanna knew Keola was alarming her about something about her condition so she went to the hospital.
As soon as the woman was inside the hospital, she fainted.
She was rushed to the ICU, where she faded in and out of consciousness while on morphine.
“Turns out my backache was due to a double kidney infection and because it was untreated for so long it was one of the worst cases they had ever seen,” Alhanna shared. “On top of that I had an antibiotic resistant bug that had only ever affected one other person in the UK. It was killing me and the doctors told me if I had left it any longer I would have died and more than likely my son also.”
Now, Alhanna and her son, Lincoln, are alive and well, thanks to Keola.
The Akita , who absolutely adores her new little brother, has happily taken on the role of his nanny.
Alhanna also recalled that it was Keola who alerted her to the fact that she’s pregnant. She and husband Ricky had thrown out what they thought was a negative pregnancy test, only to return home to find their Akita had picked it out of the bin to show it was positive.
“She is our hero, his guardian angel and we will forever be in her debt,” Alhanna said.
