One hero dog is currently fighting for his life after taking bites from a rattlesnake to save a little girl.
Haus, a 2-year-old German Shepherd is currently recovering at the Intensive Care Unit of Blue Pearl Emergency Veterinary and Specialty Hospital in Tampa, Florida.
The courageous dog risked his life protecting Molly DeLuca, his 7-year-old sister, from an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake that appeared in their backyard on Wednesday afternoon.
Molly’s grandmother was with the two playmates when the dog suddenly jumped in front of the girl.
“She saw him jump back, and go forward, and jump back and go forward,” Molly’s mom, Donya, told Fox 13. “He was just, kind of, holding his ground.”
The DeLuca’s were not sure what happened at first, but they could tell Haus was bleeding. The family then took him to the vet, where the veterinarian found three rattlesnake bite marks.
“Just based on temperament, he was standing up for my daughter, he was standing between, he didn’t budge,” Donya said. “He kept taking hits, she was on the other side of him, and so was my mom.”
The snake had injected Haus with so much venom that it damaged the hero dog’s kidneys. The vets have to give him a steady drip of antivenin, instead of the usual one or two doses.
The veterinarians looking after Haus expect him to make a full recovery, but it won’t be cheap. Each day in the ICU costs between $1000 to $1500 while a vial of anti-venom costs $618. The German Shepherd needs 4 to 5 vials per day as the poison leaves his system.
A family friend decided to step for the family and their furry hero. Cherissa Vandergiff launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with the dog’s veterinary bills.
In just one day, the campaign has exceeded it’s $28,000 goal and has so far raised $47,435.
The DeLuca’s adopted Haus from a rescue just two months ago and has since devoted his life in protecting his family.
The funds raised from the campaign will be spent on Haus’ veterinary and medical bills. Any remaining funds will be donated to Heidi’s Legacy Rescue, the rescue group where the DeLuca’s adopted the Haus.
Get well soon, Haus! You are a hero!
