The Standard Poodle was originally developed in Germany and was mainly used as a hunting dog specialized in waterfowl. Nowadays this breed is an excellent family companion being very intelligent, affectionate and loyal. The average height of a Standard Poodle is 1 foot, 10 inches weighing about 45 to 65 pounds. They have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

Overview:

Originally bred as a hunting dog specialized in waterfowl the Standard Poodle is an independent dog with an independent spirit. He is cheerful, proud, loyal, dignified and incredibly intelligent. Nowadays he still has great hunting instincts but he is mainly seen as a family companion rather than a hunter. The Standard Poodle loves all the energy demanding activities like fly-ball, Frisbee, running, swimming and many others. If he is left alone more than a few hours a day he can become bored and might become very loud and destructive. The Standard Poodle is a great watchdog because he is very reserved with strangers and will always let you know when a stranger is approaching your property. He is known to behave well when children are around but very small children should always be well supervised when they encounter any type of dog breed because they might have the tendency to tease and no dog will accept that. Obedience training and early socialization are very important in this case and can make a big difference if you want an obedient dog.

Standard Poodle is a very intelligent dog breed. They can learn new commands very quickly which makes them quite easy to train. Usually they enjoy any type of activity so training will not be a problem for them. In fact it can be something that they will really enjoy.

Shedding should not concern you at all if you plan to buy this type of dog breed. In fact you will never find a hair in your house because the Standard Poodle is not a type of dog breed that sheds hair.

Standard Poodle Grooming:

The Standard Poodle, like many other dog breeds, need daily exercise. Don’t worry, those needs can be met quite easy with simple walks or playing some fun games. His coat needs to be shaped two or three months and proper brushing should be done every now and then.

Standard Poodle History:

The Poodle is one of the oldest dog breeds developed in Germany especially for hunting waterfowl. Even though he was bred in Germany the further development of the breed took place in France. Nowadays this breed enjoys the life of a family companion and has become very popular all around the world for his intelligence and loyalty.
