The Smooth Fox Terrier was originally developed in England and was mainly used to flush foxes out of their hiding places during fox hunts. Nowadays is mainly used as a family companion rather than a fox hunter but he still kept well his hunting instinct. The average height of a Smooth Fox Terrier is 1 foot, 3 inches weighing about 15 to 20 pounds. They have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

Originally bred in England the Smooth Fox Terrier is an independent dog with an independent spirit. He has a typical terrier temperament being very active and full of energy. He is also very intelligent and affectionate and makes an excellent family companion. The Smooth Fox Terrier loves all the energy demanding activities like fly-ball, Frisbee, running, swimming and many other fun dog games. If he is left alone more than a few hours a day he can become bored and might become very loud and destructive. The Smooth Fox Terrier is a great watchdog because he is very reserved with strangers and will always let you know when a stranger is approaching your property. He is known to behave well when children are around but very small children should always be well supervised when they encounter any type of dog breed because they might have the tendency to tease and no dog will accept that. Obedience training and early socialization are very important in this case and can make a big difference if you want to have an obedient dog without serious behavior problems.
