Boston Terrier Overview
As the name implies, the Boston Terrier breed was developed in Boston, Massachusetts. This terrier was bred from the bull and terrier pit-fighting breeds. The breed has the distinction of being the first non-sporting dog to be bred exclusively in the United States.
Boston Terrier Characteristics
This dog breed is compact, sturdy and small, but by no means delicate or fragile. The Boston has a kind and gentle nature and is often referred to as the “American Gentleman”. This dog breed is lively, high-spirited,and playful. The breed is a delightful mix of determination, strength, balance and gracefulness.
Boston Terrier Temperament
Highly intelligent, alert, and enthusiastic, the Boston Terrier is loving and loyal. This breed is quite vivacious and has a wonderful sense of humor. Boston Terriers thrive on human companionship and on being an integral part of the family. They do best in a home with children over the age of eight years and are exceedingly good with the elderly. The breed generally gets along well with other dogs and non-canine pets, although some males are aggressive toward other dogs. This breed has a very sensitive nature and is affected by voice tone and home atmosphere.
Boston Terrier Care
This dog breed requires regular brushing with a firm bristle-brush to minimize loose hair. To preserve the natural oils of the coat, the Boston Terriers should only be bathed when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo. They have the tendency to drool. The eyes and ears need to be checked and cleaned regularly. The dogs are prone to breathing difficulties, heart and skin tumors and eye problems. They do not adapt well to weather extremes.
Boston Terrier Coat
The coat of this breed is fine in texture, short, glossy, and smooth. The coat comes in various colors, including black with white markings, seal and brindle and occasionally brown with white markings. The Boston Terrier is an average shedder.
Boston Terrier Training
This dog breed is eager to please and quick to learn. The Boston Terrier can be difficult to house train and the crate training method is advised. Due to their highly sensitive nature, harsh and heavy-handed methods should never be used. This breed responds to praise, fairness, firmness, patience and consistency.
Boston Terrier Activity
Relatively inactive indoors, this breed is quite content to just be with the family at all times. However, regular daily exercise is necessary to keep this breed fit and in shape. They enjoy securely leashed walks, family play sessions and free play in a safely fenced ares. Boston Terriers adapt well in an apartment living, provided they are given sufficient exercise, attention and stimulation.
